There are many different types of bodywork. I practice a combination of Swedish, Sports, Deep, and Myofascial Release, among others, drawing from each the appropriate techniques to address clients' individual goals for the session. I have included descriptions of several types of massage to help those of you new to bodywork understand its benefits, however I do my best to tailor each session to fit your specific needs.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is the most widely used system of massage therapy
in North America. It employs long, gliding strokes, stretching,
and joint mobilizations to promote circulation and a deeper sense
of relaxation. Swedish massage has numerous potential health benefits,
including:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Relief from muscle pain, tension, soreness, and fatigue
- Improved mood, increased vigor
- Improved sleep
- Improved concentration, balance, posture, and motor skills
- Stimulation of digestion and promotion of digestive health
- Increased blood circulation and lymph return
- Greater sense of well-being
Deep Massage
From our very first attempts to roll over as infants, the ways in which we
move through the world directly impact the structure of our physical
body. When any particular physical position becomes habitual, the
integration of postural imbalances is almost inevitable. The ensuing
tension created in the supporting muscles and connective tissues
of our individual, habitual, “learned” postures often
leads to chronic pain.
Deep massage is a soft tissue technique consciously employed by
therapists to enhance bodily energy flow while simultaneously assisting
the body in recovering its structural integrity. Deep massage helps
to decompress chronically tight, shortened muscles, restore length
to contracted tissues, and bring more awareness to the body as a
singular system.
Sports Massage
Sports Massage is designed for athletes and others engaged in frequent,
intense physical activity. Therapists trained in Sports Massage
have specifically studied the roles different muscles play in various
physical movements, and they harness that knowledge to help enhance
the performance, maintain the muscular health, and facilitate injury
or competitive recovery in their clients.
Athletes at any particular stage in their training can benefit
from Sports Massage, be it before, after, or in between events,
as part of injury recovery, or part of a training regimen. Benefits
can include:
-
Promotion of healthy muscle and connective tissue
-
Restoration/maintenance of normal range of motion
-
Decreased potential for muscle tears
-
Facilitation of soft-tissue healing and decreased scarring through
increased circulation and nutrient delivery to injury site
-
Creation of strong and mobile scar tissue in the event of an injury
-
Pain-free movement
-
Mental calm and clarity
